Who are we looking for and what are the goals of the programme?
The FENS Forum is Europe’s premier neuroscience congress, attracting thousands of participants worldwide. Our online community is formed mainly by early-career researchers, who use social media channels to get informed and share interests. FENS will select 10 Social Media Ambassadors with a strong presence on relevant Social Media platforms: X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. Social Media Ambassadors are also encouraged to help promote the FENS Forum via word of mouth.
FENS is looking for scientists who are genuinely enthusiastic about the FENS Forum, have a consistent number of followers and post regularly on their accounts (minimum 2 times per week). The ultimate goal is to help FENS Forum 2024 become visible to larger audiences and reach out to neuroscientists across borders. This is why the selected 10 Social Media Ambassadors will come from various geographical contexts.

2022 Social Media AmbassadorsThe Social Media Ambassadors programme was an incredible opportunity that opened the doors to new connections and unique experiences. Not only did it provide a network for us to communicate about the conference, but it also added an extra dimension to the forum. One highlight of the programme was the social media ambassador social where we met members of the FENS Communication Committee, who shared their insights and perspectives on FENS with us. As ambassadors, we had the flexibility to attend the sessions we were interested in and share our highlights on social media. We had the freedom to contribute as much or as little as we wanted, making it an accessible opportunity for all. The programme also offered free tickets to jump the FENS and local travel tickets. Overall, the social media ambassador programme exceeded my expectations, and I now have new connections across the world. I highly recommend this programme to anyone interested in social media promotion.

2022 Social Media AmbassadorsBeing a Social Media Ambassador makes you experience the FENS Forum in a special way. It clearly helps you make the most of the Forum.
As a Social Media Ambassador, you enjoy the Forum before, during and after the congress, and not only attending but also being part of it in some way. Being a Social Media Ambassador helps you connect with people in Neuroscience and makes you want to know more about the speakers, their lab, and their work. Also, with my friends during the FENS-Forum we had a great time thinking of original photos and videos to publicise the congress. I really enjoyed the Virtual Forum 2020 and the Paris Forum 2022, where I finally met the FENS Communications team and the rest of the Social Media Ambassadors face-to-face. In short, for me this has been an enriching experience as well as a lot of fun. I hope to see you all again in 2024 in Vienna, and I also hope to see new faces in the Social Media Ambassadors team!

2022 Social Media AmbassadorsBack in 2020, we were hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the infamous temporary stop for in-person conferences. Despite FENS being held online that year, one could feel the excitement of the neuroscience community through the screen in general, and via social media in particular. Anyone logging on to Twitter and clicking on the hashtag #FENS2020 could follow live how the conference was unfolding. Even if that year we lost the spontaneous component of social interactions, I was impressed by how social media filled in that gap in such an enthusiastic way. Science has not escaped the boom of social media and has brought to the table new ways of interacting, discussing, and even collaborating. This was one of the reasons I decided to engage in the Social Media Ambassadors initiative at FENS 2022. For me,
being a Social Media Ambassador at FENS 2022 meant reporting live on Twitter the conferences, workshops, and other events that were a must-go in my programme. This not only made me engage more with the different events but was also an excellent exercise of scientific communication by, for example, synthetising complex scientific concepts in 280 characters. The neuroscience community vividly engaged with the content of the Ambassadors and made #FENS2022 an online hub for dynamic interactions by connecting not only ideas, but the engine of science: people. The Twittersphere was the perfect complement to an in-person conference.
